Atkins Area and Community Information

History

Atkins homeLike so many of America's towns, the east central Iowa community of Atkins started as a railroad community. The Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad came through Atkins and the Benton  County area in the 1880s as it pushed westward. Because Atkins was halfway between Omaha and Chicago, it became an important stop for freight and passenger service. The town was named “Hague” but was quickly renamed “Poker Flat” because a local storekeeper used a red hot poker to warm his customers’ beer. This unusual heating method turned the beer flat. Eventually, the town was renamed Atkins after a railroad man. Today real estate in Atkins houses over 1,600 residents. Prospective  buyers will find a thriving business district, beautiful homes and a great school system located just a few minutes from Cedar Rapids.

Along with an interesting history,  homes are near lively activities and celebrations for families. The Watermelon Days Celebration kicks off with a 5K run, parades and live music. This August event also offers a softball tournament, car show and watermelon competition topped off with plenty of fireworks. Atkins real estate is available for families who love small town living.
